Innovation & Creativity

As a graphic designer, I’m always thinking in a creative space, but being innovative and creative is about more than just making a pretty poster; instead, it’s about thinking on your feet, problem solving and trying out new solutions. No matter what I’m working on, whether it’s a poster series that communicates the dangers of minority stereotypes or a game design that teaches players about the beauty of Chinese folklore, I’m considering my audience, delivery and product efficacy. I’m generating new ideas to share with the public, and below is an example of my skill set in creativity.

Peng Dynasty Game Design

In the Spring 2021 semester, I began developing the framework for a role-playing game (RPG) titled “Peng Dynasty.” This project started as a class assignment during the Graphic Design Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Seminar, but it quickly grew into something much more. The project required me to think about every facet of game design, from the illustration to the player experience. I had to troubleshoot web design and learn how to code; more importantly, however, I had to think innovatively and creatively every step of the way. I wanted to use this RPG as a way to communicate how incredible and rich Chinese folklore is to a Western audience, and in the process, I created five original characters, three player roles, game narratives and animations. In March 2022, I also pitched my game design at the IU Walter Center Connect Challenge and won first place.
