Your Potential Roles

Like most RPG’s, you have multiple base characters to choose from, including the Monk, Swordsman and Healer. Each have their own special skills (and drawbacks), so choose wisely.

The Monk

Become a powerful monk, inspired by Tang Seng from the famous book “Journey to the West.” As the Longevity Monk, you can pull from a plethora of prayers and scriptures, imbued with powerful spiritual energy. No matter the level of the enemies you face, your scriptures will inflict significant damage. Your weakest point is your low HP and lack of strength.

The Swordsman

Train as a master swordsman and unlock legendary weapons—like the Jade Sword—only available for this role. As the Sword Saint, you are guaranteed to knock out most low to mid-level monsters with just one blow. But given your lack of affinity with spiritual energy, due to your sword energy, you cannot use many elixirs, spells and items used to level up other characters.

The Healer

Become the Light or Dark Healer to either help your companions or damage your foes. As a Light Healer, your skills are centered around healing and restoring your allies’ HP, but as a Dark Healer, your skillset centers around the use of poisons against your enemies. As a healer, however, you must consume an elixir every day or you will slowly lose your powers.

Meet Your Companions

Sun Wukong

The Monkey King

Sun Wukong is one of the pivotal characters featured in the famous novel “Journey to the West” by Wu Cheng’en, and he is the first character you can unlock in this game—Peng Dynasty. His signature weapon is his Golden Staff, which, coupled with his immense strength and speed, allows him to take out any opponent he faces. But beware of his mischievous side, for your plans rarely go as planned when the Monkey King is around. Learn more about his backstory below.

Zhu Bajie

The Redeemed Glutton

Zhu Bajie, yet another character in “Journey to the West” and the beloved sidekick of Sun Wukong, is the second character available to players. He uses his famed Nine-Toothed Rake—made of iron and jade—to fight his enemies, making him a formidable opponent. His most notable traits (and flaws) include his gluttony and laziness, which means you’ll have to constantly incentivize him with gold nuggets or food as well as watch out for any thieving. Bai Suzhen

The Immortal White Snake

Bai Suzhen is the titular character in the Legend of the White Snake and the third character players can unlock. She is skilled in the Taoist magical arts and can shapeshift into a large, white snake capable of inflicting great damage to her foes as well as protecting her friends. At night, she will often call out to her husband, reminiscing about her lost love; moreover, she refuses to ever take another life again due to her vow to him. Learn more about her story by clicking below.

Huli Jing

The Benevolent Vixen

Huli Jing is often written in Chinese folklore as either a benevolent or malevolent spirit, and she is the final available character. Similar to Bai Suzhen, she is capable of shapeshifting into a Nine-Tailed Fox, and she has a high affinity for magical energy. Being the youngest of the spirits, she is very stubborn and feisty, making her difficult to work with at times. Therefore, she also requires the most guidance out of everyone in the group.  Meet Your Foe

Baigujing

The White Bone Spirit

Baigujing is the primary antagonist in “Journey to the West” as well as the fated enemy of Sun Wukong. She is the cause of any and all calamities or obstacles you will face throughout the game and is the final boss. She is a powerful demoness, with her original form being a massive skeleton. Her spiritual powers and strength rival that of Sun Wukong’s. Once she is defeated, there are multiple endings you can unlock, but if you lose, you’ll have to restart. Learn more about her story below.

Peng Huilin | 彭慧琳

She is an ABC—American Born Chinese—and has been raised to take pride in her Chinese heritage since a very young age. Her American (and legal) name is Heidi, and her Chinese (and given) name is Huilin, which means something akin to “intelligent beauty.” Both names hold an important place in her life. Her last name, however, has been Americanized and is now pronounced “Pang” instead of “P-eu-ng.”

Growing up, she was often told the stories of the Yaoguai featured in “Journey to the West,” and one of her family’s favorite movies was “A Chinese Odyssey,” which takes a comedic approach to the traditional tale of Sun Wukong. Due to America’s lack of rich folklore regarding these types of spirits and monsters, she wanted to modernize the beloved Chinese stories she was told as a child and make them more approachable to a Western audience. She also wanted to create a game to combat her own lack of game design knowledge and prowess.

She hopes this project will help educate others about the richness and beauty of Chinese culture. Moreover, she hopes viewers will come to appreciate Chinese as well as other Asian cultures in light of the recent and tragic events regarding hate crimes against the AAPI community.
