Di:chotomy Afterparty

I was asked to create a poster for my old dance team’s afterparty and given complete creative liberty to do so. The team specializes in K-Pop and Hip-Hop dance covers, so I had to channel the resurgence of Y2K album visuals. I decided to practice my Blender skills, and I created a 3D Chrome text effect on the word Di:chotomy—that year’s showcase theme. My body copy was spunky and drew heavy inspiration from NewJeans album art. The graphics were pulled from Adobe stock resources and placed lawfully, yet chaotically.

Di:chotomy Showcase

I wanted to create a personal poster for my partner who was performing in her final senior showcase. Her piece was energetic and enigmatic, and I hoped to capture some of its energy in a poster than could be incorporated into her set while also broadcasting the show as a whole. Naturally, she served as the work’s key visual, yet the center type stands on equal ground, demanding attention after you’re first drawn in. The secondary information regarding the show’s information takes a back seat, but it’s still legible and clear.

Are we still human?

I was tasked with creating a poster to commemorate the upcoming IU Granfalloon Festival. And yet again, I had complete creative freedom, as my design would be featured next to the posters of three of my fellow designers. I wanted to capture a darker aspect of technological innovation, which was a huge theme of that year’s festival, through type and color. Mandarin is my native language; thus, I wanted to also play with hidden messages through the use of a foreign language, adding to the uncertainty to rising AI and reliance on tech. The whole poster is a dark, almost blood-like red that contrasts with the key typographic visual of dismantled Chinese characters, referencing machine components.

Exhibit Columbus

This poster was designed to help recruit dancers from the Japanese community to take part in a cultural expo for the city of Columbus, IN. It was my first time designing in Japanese, so I played with mixing how Japanese is traditionally read (vertically) with how it is read in modern times and Western contexts. The colors needed to be playful and bright and minimal graphic elements helped break up the text, as children and families were our target demographic.
